Before we get into the different kinds of superchargers, let’s see what they do. A supercharger basically forces air into your naturally aspirated engine. A naturally aspiration means that if you have 300ci engine, it can breathe in 300ci of air and turn it into a power per revolution (per complete cycle).

The supercharger forces more air than it’s capable of. Every 14.7 pounds of boost that you on your engine will basically double the amount of air that your engine takes in naturally. So, you are going to have the following – a 300ci engine is going to basically take in about 600ci of air at 14.7 pounds of boost. All kinds of superchargers are belt driven that means they are all mechanical and depend on the engine RPM.

There are three different types of belt-driven superchargers – roots, centrifugal and twin screw. The root style supercharger is being around for a long time. The problem here is that the higher you go on with the boost levels, the more heat they generate. The next type is the centrifugal supercharger. They have a couple of advantages over the root style or the screw compressor. First of all, they mount to the front of the engine on a braket system and feature piping system. This allows you to add an intercooler very easily. The screw style is the last one – you have a good bottom-end horsepower and torque, but we have again a problem with the heating.
