The Magic Roundabout – See How This Amazing 7-Circle Roundabout Actually Works
The roundabout that we are going to talk about was constructed in 1972. It features five mini-roundabouts arranged around a sixth central, anti-clockwise roundabout. It was named after the popular children’s television series The Magic Roundabout. One interesting fact is that it was voted the fourth scariest junction in UK in 2009. The construction is located near the County Ground, home of Swindon Town F.C., England. It’s very difficult to get direction if you go there for the first time. It’s a little bit confusing as the traffic flow around the inner larger roundabout is anticlockwise while the traffic flow around the five mini-roundabouts and the outer loop is in the usual clockwise manner.
All the cars are coming from five different roads and the complex roundabout offers multiple paths between them. As we said if you feel uncomfortable to step inside this complex junction, you may choose to use only the outer circle. In the very beginning the mini-roundabouts were not marked and for this case a police officer was stationed at each mini roundabout to monitor the traffic until the layout was fine tuned. The role of these five police officers was to oversee how drivers were dealing with the unique and complex arrangement. In 2005 it was voted to be the worst roundabout in UK. The results came after a a survey by one of the biggest insurance companies on the island.
It might look strange and like a nightmare, but in fact there haven’t been any accidents there.
